Reporting Crime

We at the Caldwell Police Department acknowledge that the citizens of our community are our strongest asset to help deter crime. Caldwell has approximately 33,000 residents in comparison to roughly 49 patrol officers and detectives. The math speaks for itself.

Therefore, Caldwell residents are essential in the fight against crime. When reporting a crime, please be as detailed as possible. Names, locations, license plates numbers, vehicle's make/model, personal identifiers (tattoos, scars, height, hair color, etc) any such detail that you can provide will help in our investigation of criminal activity. Use the phone numbers listed on this page to call the appropriate authority. However, if you feel more comfortable reporting suspicious or criminal activities on line, we invite you to email us at crimeprevention@ci.caldwell.id.us

Report Graffiti

It's an eyesore. It can be obscene. It can be at a public park, on your garage or someone’s business. No matter the location or what the words say the message graffiti sends is one of ownership. If graffiti is left alone, it puts the word out that the person or group that tagged the area owns it. Gangs or “tagger crews” use graffiti as a mark of identification and as a means to convey messages to rival gangs. In return, as graffiti sets it becomes a writing tablet for the rival gang to “tag” their message which of course must be bigger and better than the initial writing. Graffiti can also be non-gang related and merely the act of random vandalism. In either case, if it is not your property or not wanted – it is a crime.

When home owners or businesses quickly paint over or cover up graffiti, the message sent is once again one of ownership. You are letting the perpetrator(s) know that this is your home or property and that you take pride in your possessions and your community.

If you are ever hit by graffiti, you should contact the police. The Caldwell Police are interested in graffiti as it can help serve as an indicator of possible gang activity. Sometimes tips are given in graffiti as to who committed the crime, as “tags” are often created as a form of self identification. If needed, we will take a report noting the location and markings; a photograph may even be taken. After the officer obtains the information he needs, we encourage you to cover the graffiti as quickly as possible.

Throughout the year, Caldwell officers participate in random graffiti clean ups as a service to the community we serve and to help in the prevention of this type of crime. The picture located on this page reflects some of their handiwork.
