What is the Caldwell Citizens Police Academy?
The Caldwell Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is a community oriented policing program designed for the citizens of Caldwell. It is conducted once a year at the Caldwell Police Department in order to accomplish three goals:
•To allow citizens of Caldwell to meet the men and women who serve them.
•To educate the citizens of Caldwell in the “how’s” and “why’s” of law enforcement.
•To provide Caldwell Police Officers the opportunity to meet and hear from the citizens they serve.
CPA students are encouraged to be involved in the instruction by this “hands-on” course. The Caldwell Police Department encourages input from citizens.
What Topics are covered in the Citizen Police Academy?
CPA participants are given a realistic view of the Police Department. A wide variety of topics are discussed: patrol procedures, officer survival, criminal investigation, narcotics, gangs, crime prevention, police training, and a variety of other law enforcement subjects. Canyon County Court Watch
Mission Statement and Objectives
The Canyon County Court Watch is an organization of concerned citizens who volunteer their time to monitor the judicial system. The volunteer members are trained to observe the courtrooms’ criminal justice system procedures in order to promote accountability for sentences imposed for crimes in our community.
What is Court Watch?
Court watch is a method for community members to hold the court system and its players accountable, while spreading awareness on local crime issues. Too often Caldwell citizens feel that the Judicial System has let them down and are without an avenue to be involved. As a resident of this city, you are entitled to public knowledge of courtroom activities and are encouraged to be proactive in that arena. This program allows "laypeople" to observe the court proceedings and facilitate a dialogue with other community members as to the efficiency and fairness of these proceedings.
Who can participate?
Anyone interested in the court system is encouraged to participate in Court Watch. Diversity is an advantage, since every person will enter the courtroom with different experiences to draw upon. There is a broad range of men and women active in the organization, from college students to retirees.
How does it work?
There are several steps that occur after a person has been cited/arrested for a crime, hearings, entering pleas, etc. We attend important court appearances relating to specific cases and observe the proceedings, making note of the events taking place. The group then meets as a whole every few weeks and discusses the cases, along with any concerns or questions we have about them. Finally, a press release is drafted to educate the Caldwell community as to the practices of their court system. This allows for all citizens to be informed as to what their judicial system is doing to protect them from crime.
How do I get involved?
Read through the Court Watch Information Packet by clicking here or you can obtain one from the Caldwell Police Department. You will then need to fill out the Court Watch Application by clicking here to download a copy or contact the Caldwell Police Department for a copy. Return the completed application to the Caldwell Police Department and a representative for the organization will contact you and match your schedule with the court appearances needing observers.
