Drug Education

DARE Officer John Baldazo
More than 200 5th graders graduated from the 12-week Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in May 2006. The graduates are all students in the Caldwell School District.

The CPD wishes to thank the wonderful teachers and dedicated administration at Washington, Van Buren, Sacagawea, Lincoln, Lewis & Clark, and Wilson Elementary Schools who have worked to help their students learn why and how to say no to drugs and violence.

Detective Baldazo received an award for his work in 2005 at Wilson Elementary. The DARE program has been taught in the schools for 11 years. DARE teaches how to recognize and resist drugs. The students are told about the cost of drug use to an individual’s health, finances, and self-esteem. Officers focus on helping the students identify the long-term affects of violence and drugs on society and the environment. Officers strive to make the time spent with the children uplifting, exposing them to the preventative and positive side of law enforcement.

DARE officers know the success of this program. They have seen that teaching one 5th grader teaches the whole family. They’ve seen it at countless high school graduations and local sports events, in the familiar faces of a family waving hello at a grocery store. And next year, when Caldwell’s population could reach 35,000, Detective Baldazo will begin to educate a new and bigger than ever group of 5th graders.

D.A.R.E. Graduation Essay

WOW! D.A.R.E. is one of the most exciting things I have done this year. D.A.R.E. means Drug, Abuse, Resistance, Education. This means to avoid drugs and those who offer them to you. This stuff is important because a lot of people are hurting themselves and it can become a bigger problem to them. I have leaned this information for a great person, his name is John Baldazo. He is the one to tell you about drugs.

First, is that we have Officer Baldazo as a guest teacher and he brought some neat things to us, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, and even a water bottle.

Next I liked D.A.R.E. because Officer Baldazo is a funny, sweet, awesome officer who is wonderful and nice to you. He puts a big smile on his face as well as yours. He taught us about alcohol, tobacco, and nicotine. After I found out about how these drugs can hurt you, I will tell anyone NO to drugs. They are poisonous . They can give you cancer.

I pledge to avoid drugs and people who try to give them to me.

D.A.R.E. Graduation Essay

D.A.R.E. is a program that teaches kids how to avoid drugs. It means Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Another important thing about D.A.R.E. is the one who is teaching it. Our Officer Baldazo is hilarious and we always laugh at his stories and jokes. Once in a while he throws in a couple of dance moves and it’s so funny. He tells us about his family and even his birthday cake. He teaches us why it’s important to stay away from dugs.

First, I’m going to talk about smoking and cigarettes. Smoking can damage everything in your body. I’m talking about your lungs, heart, brain, and much more. It causes bad breath, yellow teeth and wherever you go you smell like smoke. Not only can it harm you, but it can harm the people around you. When I was in Iowa last summer, I was in the car with my grandma. She smokes so whenever she lit a cigarette, I had to role down the window, or cover my nose with my jacket. People who smoke can hurt people around them by smoking. That is called second hand smoke. Other people breathe in that smoke and it damages their lungs and the person who is smoking.

Next, I’m going to talk about peer pressure. Peer Pressure has a bunch of different meanings. There’s personal pressure, friendly pressure, and of course peer pressure. Personal pressure is when you pressure yourself to do something. Friendly pressure is when your friends ask you to do something. You reject them and they accept your answer. Peer pressure is all kinds of pressure. For example when someone pressure you so hard you do it.

Last, I will talk about saying “no” to drugs. Saying no is important because you are learning to walk away from drugs from the situation. You can harm your body by taking drugs from someone. Instead you can join clubs or do sports to avaoid drugs and offers.

I pledge that I will NEVER do drugs or take offers from anyone. I will always remember Officer Baldazo and what he taught us.
